Government Funding for research announcement
Mary Harney, Minister for Health and Children, announced 33 novel research projects to improve patient health which will be funded through a new joint funding scheme co-ordinated by the Medical Research Charities Group (MRCG) and the Health Research Board (HRB). This funding will help support research into both common and rare diseases including diabetes, cancer, retinitis pigmentosa (a form of blindness), muscular dystrophy and cystic fibrosis.Read more.
Research Title: Adipocyte Size and Type 2 Diabetes in Obesity; A Study of Patients undergoing Bariatric Surgery.
This project will study patients having bariatric surgery. There are two groups of patients, one group have Type 2 diabetes while they other group have healthy glucose and cholesterol levels. The project may ultimately lead identifying how and what fat cells need to do to protect from the harmful effects of obesity. This might lead to new treatments which could improve fat function and so help prevent the development of Type 2 diabetes.Investigator:Dr. Donal O'Shea, St. Columcilles Hospital and St Vincent’s University Hospital Read more
Research Title: A randomised controlled clinical trial of GPRS mobile telephone technology for self management of type 1 diabetes.
The project is a randomised controlled trial in a group of children and adolescents using mobile phone technology to download blood glucose readings from the patient’s meter using their phone through a secure remote server to a secure website. The project aims to determine whether mobile telephone technology can be used to improve glycaemic control (blood glucose control).Investigators: Dr. Diarmuid Smith, Beaumont Hospital and Dr. Nuala Murphy, Children’s University Hospital, Temple Street and Mater Misercordiae Hospital.
