Birthdays
You can go to all the birthday parties you want and have a good time with your friends. All you have to do is take care with what you eat and make sure to get your insulin.
At birthday parties people usually have a lot of sweet things to eat and drink like birthday cake and fizzy drinks. Because you have to be careful with your blood sugar, you cannot have as many sweets as the other children. You can have a small taste but that is all. There is no reason for you to stay home, though. You can go to all the birthdays you want and have a good time with your friends. All you have to do is take care what you eat and make sure to get your insulin.
When you get invited to a birthday party your parents have to tell your friend’s mother and father that you have diabetes: They should also say that it is no problem as long as you are careful, and tell them how to make sure that you have just as nice a party as the other kids.
When you are at a birthday party there is often a lot of fun going on. If you play a lot, your blood sugar can get low and you might not feel well. You might feel sweaty, shaky or dizzy or turn pale and loose concentration. If that happens you have to tell the grown-ups who are at the party. You also have to get something to eat and drink right away.
If you take care, eat and drink properly, and take your insulin, you can have as much fun as all the others. The only difference is that you cannot eat as many sweets or have as many regular fizzy drinks as the other kids.
