School
What to do if you become ill while you are at school.
Food in school
When you have diabetes you have to eat more often than most of your friends. You should always have breakfast and a few hours later you need to have a light morning snack - some fruit or a small sandwich and perhaps something to drink. A few hours after your lunch you will need an afternoon snack. Even though you are at school with your friends who don’t eat as often as you have to, you must not forget your small meals in between breakfast, lunch and dinner.
You and your parents have to make sure that you bring all the food you need. If the school has a canteen you can perhaps get what you need there, but make sure that the food they serve is healthy for you. Your parents should talk with your school about the food.
If you become ill
If you feel ill, you have to tell your teacher. Your parents and teachers will probably have already discussed how to help you if there is a problem. If you have a new or substitute teacher you should always tell them that you have diabetes and perhaps give them your parent's number so that they can contact them if you become ill. That way you can get help fast and you will avoid some of the unpleasant things that might happen when you have diabetes.
