Transylvania Trek 2010

Out of the Dragons Den and into Dracula’s Lair

Sean Gallagher helps launch Transylvania Trek 2010
in aid of Fighting Blindness and the Diabetes Federation of Ireland

One man who knows a thing or two about setting challenges and achieving goals is leading entrepreneur and TV dragon, Sean Gallagher, and today he was calling on people to test themselves in aid of Irish charities Fighting Blindness and the Diabetes Federation of Ireland at the launch of their Transylvania Trek 2010.

The trek, from May 25 – 30 next year, promises anyone who takes part an unforgettable experience in a hidden corner of Europe almost unchanged for 850 years. This unique adventure, which involves a sponsored trek of some 70kms over four days, is being organised by Fighting Blindness in partnership with the Diabetes Federation of Ireland.
Trekkers will get the chance to take in the majestic Bucegi Mountains, overlooking Transylvania, at a perfect time of year with the snow is melting and the region’s famed wild flowers are in bloom. It is also a perfect opportunity to visit Count Vlad or Dracula's Castle and experience some of the delights of Romania’s beautiful capital Bucharest.

And even though it is Dracula country, participants need not be too scared of the challenge as the Transylvania Trek is rated as moderate, meaning an average level of fitness is required to walk the route. Taking place over just five days, it is also the ideal option for those who may have limited time due to home or work commitments.

Patrick Quinn, CEO of Fighting Blindness, said: “For those looking for a challenge that is fully achievable while also offering tremendous rewards, then the Transylvania Trek is for them.

Sean Gallagher, who overcame near blindness after suffering from congenital cataracts as a child, said: “From my own personal experience, I know only too well the difficulties associated with overcoming sight problems and so I am very conscious of the importance of the work that Fighting Blindness and the Diabetes Federation of Ireland carry out.”

Sean added: “I am delighted to do my small bit to promote their work and, while I know people are being a lot more careful with their money these days, if at all possible, they should do their best to support these worthwhile charities.”

Kieran O’Leary, CEO of the Diabetes Federation of Ireland added: “In the current economic climate it is more important than ever that charities work together on fundraising projects. We are delighted to be teaming up with Fighting Blindness for the Transylvania Trek".
He continued: “Funds from this project will be put towards our 3 year Galway Diabetic Foot study. This study will deliver a podiatry service not previously available which will have immediate benefits to people with diabetes.“It will determine the financial and personal savings that can be made by implementing an integrated model of care which would virtually eliminate foot complications of diabetes and the associated risk of amputation.”
